Important Announcement: Early Dismissal, Solar Glasses Distribution, and Safety Precautions for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/where-when/

In preparation for the upcoming 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, LCPS is  implementing essential safety measures to safeguard our students, staff,  and bus drivers. According to NASA's prediction, the eclipse path will affect Jonesville, VA, on April 8, 2024,  from 1:51 pm to 4:24 pm, with a maximum percent coverage of 89.6% at 3:09 pm at which time our students and staff would normally be dismissed from school.  Additionally, for those who may prefer to watch the eclipse from the safety and comfort of their homes, you can access live coverage of the event via the following link: NASA Eclipse 2024 Live Coverage.

To ensure the well-being of everyone in our school community, we have decided to dismiss school early on April 8, 2024. The school division will dismiss at 12:05 pm to allow families and staff ample time to prepare for this remarkable astronomical event.

In addition to the early dismissal, we are pleased to announce that solar viewing glasses will be provided to all students and staff free of charge. These glasses are essential for safely observing the eclipse. It's crucial to emphasize the risks associated with viewing the eclipse without proper eye protection. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can cause severe eye damage or blindness. Regular sunglasses are not sufficient for viewing the sun.

Here are some key details regarding the eclipse dismissal, safety measures, and solar glasses distribution:

We believe that prioritizing safety during this rare celestial event is of utmost importance. By providing solar glasses and taking precautionary measures, we can ensure that everyone can safely enjoy the eclipse experience.
